Dubbed by many as “the only area in the U.S. with perfect weather,” San Diego is the oldest port on the West Coast and the sixth-largest city in the nation. Long known as a naval base, the military—along with tourism—still dominates the economy. In addition to rolling mountains, beautiful deserts, and seventy miles of coastline featuring some of the world’s best beaches, San Diego offers a wealth of attractions such as Sea World, Wild Animal Park, and the San Diego Zoo.
Art lovers can choose from many fine museums or catch a Shakespearean play at the Old Globe Theater. With more championship golf courses than any other U.S. city—over 85—linksters will have no problem teeing off. The city also hosts the NFL’s Chargers and Major League Baseball’s Padres.
Travelers will find a wealth of lodging options available. They include full-service hotels offering room service, well appointed health clubs, cozy bed & breakfasts, clean and comfortable motels and hotels to suit the budget conscious, hostels offering the back packer a bed for the night and condominium and house rentals for those who wish to be independent.
San Diego is very much a family destination and children are welcome. Several of the larger resort style properties offer seasonal activities for children, while the more modest properties may offer a children's play area.
